Forest Children Meet Squiggly the Snake

January 31, 1968

One morning when little Charlie woke up the sun was shining brightly. It was a beautiful day in the mountains. When he looked out the window there he saw his friend Ethel the Elf. He called out to her, “Hi Ethel what are you doing here?”

“I came over to play with you. Come on out and play in the snow with me.”

Little Charlie said, “I haven’t had my breakfast yet but as soon as I have breakfast then I can come out.”

It wasn’t long before little Charlie ran outside and said, “Hi, What are we going to play?”

And she said, “Oh I don’t know. Let’s go over and see the Bunny Twins and see if they want to play too.”

They ran over to see Pam and Kim the Bunny twins. They had already had breakfast and ran right out to “play with Ethel the Elf and little Charlie. As they were walking along the forest path Pam saw something lying in the path. She picked it up thinking it was just a stick when it started to wiggle! It was a little lively brown snake.

Little Charlie said, “Is it a good snake or a bad snake?”

Ethel the Elf said “It’s a good snake. See, its head isn’t diamond shape. It is just plain slivers into the rest of his body.”

“Hello Mr. Snake,” said Kim the Bunny twin. “What is your name?”

“My name is Squiggly.”

“That’s a funny name,” said her twin Pam. “What do you call you that for?”

“Because I squiggle all the time. If you will let me down I will show you what I do.”

Pam put Squiggly the Snake down on the ground and in no time Squiggly had gone into the woods and the children couldn’t see him. Soon little Squiggly called, “Come on and get me!”

The only time the children knew where he was, was when he called to them. They followed his voice and little Squiggly kept on squiggling along the ground. The next time he called he was in back of the little children. “Come on and get me!”

The children turned around and Charlie said, “Where are you?”

And there he was right in back of them laughing. “This is why they call me Squiggly,” he explained “because I can squiggle right out of sight so easily.”

With that he squiggled into the woods again and the forest children went in to see mama Bear for a glass of milk and some cookies.
