Charlie Bear Serves Barbecued Chicken

One day Charlie bear was out in the backyard barbecuing chicken for some friends who were coming over for dinner. Little Annie came running out of the house and asked if her friend Robertha the rabbitt could come over too.


Charlie bear scratched behind his ear and said, “Now let me see. We have four chickens here. There are you and little Charlie, and Mr. and Mrs. Rex Deer and the twins, Danny and Davey, and Mama and me. That makes eight of us. Yes, I think we have enough for your friend Robertha the rabbitt. Will be happy to have her come – if it’s all right with her mother!”

Little Annie said, “Oh, goodie, goodie. I’ll go right over and get her.”

In a few minutes little Charlie came out and said, “Papa, the chicken smells so good, can I invite my friend Lenall, Robertha’s brother over, too?”

“Well, well,” papa Charlie Bear said. “I don’t know about that. We have Mr. and Mrs. Rex Deer and the two twins, Danny and Davey, and little Annie and Robertha, Mama Bear and me, and you. If we invite Lenall that makes 10 of us. Do you think only four chickens will be enough for so many hungry animals?”

“Papa “, answered little Charlie, “if you let me have Lanall over, I’ll share my part of the chicken with him.”

“If you share yours with Lenall and Annie shares her’s with Robertha, I’m sure we’ll all have plenty to eat,” replied papa Charlie.

So little Charlie ran over to get Lenall. In hardly any time at all, Annie and Robertha and little Charlie in Lenall we’re back ready to eat barbecued chicken.

Mama bear came out the back door and asked, “What are all these children up to?”

Papa Charlie Bear explained, “Little Annie wanted Robertha to come over and little Charlie wanted Lenall to come over. Our children said they’d share the chicken with their friends. So, I thought it would be all right. Don’t you?”

“Hmm, hmm,” said Mama Bear. “I don’t know. But they’re here, so I guess they can stay.”

Very soon Mr. and Mrs. Rex Deer and Danny and Davey arrived. Everyone sat down at the table and had a wonderful meal of barbecue chicken. And there was enough for everyone.
